Here, winner of 'Canada's Drag Race: Canada Vs The World' season two, Lemon, chats to us about her beginnings in drag, pre-performance rituals, drag queen tips and more. . . Before she hits the stage for 'Slay Belles' down under.
What influenced you to start drag? How did you get started in drag?
Originally I just needed rent money and saw a flyer for a $500 prize, but after doing it I realised how much I loved it and how much it was made for me, and me for it!
What was something that had a significant impact on your persona/style?
I think living in New York really had an impact cause you can wear the wildest things and nobody will bat an eye, so it’s a great place to experiment and find your style.
What advice/tips would you give somebody starting to drag?
Be nice to the girls in the dressing room! You can be the best drag queen in the world but if nobody wants to work with you it does not matter at all.
What does a ‘day in the life’ look like for you?
I wake up, look gorgeous, continue to look gorgeous, and then it’s bedtime.
Do you have any pre-performance rituals?
Giggle gossip.
Who has been the most influential person in your life?
Definitely, my mom, she’s been a guiding force forever and always encouraged me to be myself fully.
If drag queens were desserts, which one would you be and why? (e.g. zesty and vibrant like a lemon meringue pie?)
I would be a lemon cream pie.
You can invite three people to a dinner party, dead or alive. Who would they be?
Rihanna, a writer, and a music producer and I’d lock the door until we had 'R9'.
What are your two favourite drag queen anthems?
'Come Through' - Priyanka ft Lemon. AND all of my other music.
Who’s your favourite Australian music artist?
Troye Sivan!
What is your favourite book of all time?
'A Little Life' by Hanya Yanagihara.
What are the must-have beauty products for a drag performer?
Perfume! Stop the stink.
What’s the best way for a drag performer to recover physically and mentally after an intense show or tour?
Cuddling a small dog always works for me.
What is your favourite wellness product or tip?
Marijuana.
What are some drag queen-approved tips for building confidence on stage or the runway?
Lie! To yourself and to everyone else! Gaslight yourself into girlbossing.
