Strings And Voices – A Sanctuary Of Sound Coming To Hawthorn Arts Centre Throughout August

This August, as winter settles across Melbourne’s inner east, Hawthorn Arts Centre will glow with song, strings, and shared breath, with Strings And Voices.

Homophonic!

Strings And Voices is a luminous new concert series featuring atmospheric music across four Saturdays in August.

It has been curated as an immersive celebration of the relationship between the voice and string instruments, inviting audiences into a world of trembling bows, soaring harmonies, and cinematic soundscapes. Strings And Voices will present four unforgettable evenings with some of the country’s most evacuating, boundary-pushing artists, gathering to create intimate and soul-warming performances.

Whether it’s the hushed power of Lior with a string quarter led by Nigel Westlake, or the transcendent textures of Xani Kolac in ‘Hymns For Atheists’, the dream-like chamber-pop of Georgia Fields and Andromeda String Quartet, the genre-defying harp landscapes of Harpedelique Ensemble, or the radiant queer storytelling of Homophonic!, the series offers audiences a rare listening experience.

Lior will open proceedings with a string quarter led by legendary composer and conductor Nigel Westlake. Renowned for his luminous songwriting and emotionally resonant live performance, Lior will revisit works from across his celebrated catalogue.

Then, the series will end with a bold, celebratory finale, Homophonic!’s ‘RESPECT’. It’s a powerful collection of newly-commissioned works inspired by the stories and lives of LGBTQIA+ elders, performed by a chamber ensemble as you’ve never seen them and led by Artistic Director Miranda Hill. Homophonic! has spent more than a decade amplifying queer voices within contemporary classical music.

Joining the programme too will be Melbourne-based, Chinese-Australian composer and multi-instrumentalist QiQi. QiQi’s genre-fluid work draws together traditional Chinese instrumentation, jazz, and contemporary composition.

Strings And Voices is on at Hawthorn Arts Centre (Melbourne) every Saturday from 1-29 August.
