The sun-soaked, strawberry-flavoured vibes of 'Better' are evident as soon as it begins: uplifting instrumentation and a vibrant chord progression hit instantly. Lyrically, Rosie is exploring the not-so-sunny ending of a relationship. . . And the concept of moving on from someone you know you're better off without.
Rosie wrote 'Better' herself. It's a gleeful melange of disco, pop, and '80s funk.
“I wrote 'Better' during one of the 2021's many lockdowns in an afternoon,” Rosie says. “I had just got off the phone with a friend, counselling them through their fourth break-up from the same person and wanted to make them something to make them feel better (ha), so I wrote this song to cheer them on with their newly minted singledom.”
'Better' is a glimmer of hope sonically and lyrically, featuring a chorus almost guaranteed to plant itself in the brains of all who listen. What better message to get stuck in your head than “you're better than that, you're better, better”?!
FROOTY's ready to boost your day with a dose of Rosie's positive vibes. We're stoked to be premiering 'Better' a day ahead of the track's official release. Enjoy.
Rosie has given her audiences a tease of this track in gigs already. . . And so far it's proven to be a bit of a favourite among them.
“I've been playing it at live shows for a few years and it's the song people always ask if they can listen to it at home,” she explains. “I demo'd the whole track in that first afternoon but have since re-recorded every part in it.”
Well. . . Not every part. There's one element of 'Better' which Rosie just had to keep the same from day one: “The saxophones are still the original demo track because I liked that it's a bit scrappy.”
Rosie is known to juggle between songwriter, composer, producer, session artist and DJ. She created the score for the queer horror short film 'SHADOWS', and has DJ'd at some of Melbourne's most iconic queer venues including POOF DOOF, Sircuit, Mollie's Bar And Diner, and UBQueer.
Music has always been in the picture for her – and it's clear with the bright, addictive, infectious, radical self-confidence of 'Better'. . . That she knows how to create something meaningful in the world.
“It's a track that'll pick you up off the floor of your living room, give you a hug, and push you out into the sunshine. It's for anyone who needs to hear it right now,” Rosie describes.
“I hope it makes [the listener] feel good, that it makes them want to dance, that it pats them on the shoulder and says you’re good enough, babe, you can do better, ily.”
