Birdland is Oscar, Francis and Conrad Cvitan. This year alone, they’ve supported Ocean Alley, The Rions, Hockey Dad and Mariae Cassandra, as well as enjoying spots at Hyperfest, Perth Festival’s Powerhouse stage, and Prodigy Festival.
Birdland’s new EP ‘He Was Me’ is packed with pop hooks, sharp lyricism and emotional honesty, blending the trio’s signature infectious energy with introspective songwriting, capturing the excitement, longing and uncertainty of growing up.
The full EP releases following on from recent singles ‘Maybe Lately’, ‘No Trouble’ and ‘Middle Ground’. All three of the tracks garnered support from triple j. The EP’s focus track ‘Hold Me Tight’ dissects the deep connections you make when you find your community.
“‘Hold Me Tight’ is about how lucky you are to have finally found your people. It’s a song about those specific people who don't just show up for the easy parts, but who actually stick by you when things get messy and life goes sideways,” Birdland say. “The lyrics dive into that shift from feeling isolated in your own head to feeling grounded by the ones you can truly be yourself around. It captures the relief of knowing you aren't alone anymore. The song is for and is about the people who stick around, the people that care, the people stay close no matter what.”
Themes of identity and self-discovery are explored all throughout ‘He Was Me’. The tracks focus on questioning who you are, how you see yourself, and how your identity can shift. It also delves into the ways love can shape identity, and how it can affect your sense of self.
“As triplets, a big part of our journey has been learning how to understand and find ourselves as individuals whilst still going through life together,” They explain. “These songs show those moments of self-reflection and growth, as well as simple things like people watching, where you begin to understand yourself through observing others.”
